NHB Preparation Course

Nationales Hundehalterbrevet

As of January 1, 2023, first time dog owners and/or owners adopting a dog from abroad are required to complete the Nationales Hundehalter Brevet (NHB). The goal of the NHB is to provide dog owners in Switzerland with a unified training concept and to improve the social integration of the dog population. The NHB exam must be completed within 18 months of adopting a dog and can be completed once the dog is at least 12 months of age.   



NHB Preparation Course

The practical course consists of private lessons and prepares you and your dog for the practical exam. The lessons and exam focus on the following skills:

  • Getting in and out of a car
  • Muzzle training and binding a paw
  • Walking on a leash, including sit and stay
  • Cooperation during play and rest
  • Recall in the presence of passersby
  • Cooperation during health checks including ears, teeth, and chip reading
  • Walking in the presence of a stroller and children
  • Recall in the presence of distractions
  • Restaurant visits
  • Interactions with other dogs
  • Crossing the street
  • Human-dog relationship and handling


You are welcome to book as many lessons as needed or until you feel confident and prepared for the exam. Participants must register for the exam directly through the NHB.


NHB Theory Course

We are also happy to provide the NHB Theory Course and exam. The course costs CHF 120.- per person, or CHF180.- for two people in the same household. Please contact us for more information.
